Excellent article. For those with short memories, two years ago a bill was drafted by two of our more radical Dem legislators proposing the end to fracking on state lands. Fortunately, it never reported out of committee. NM gets 40 percent of it's revenue from oil&gas. Can you imagine what such a ban would do to state revenues? Don't underestimate the insanity of the left in NM or elsewhere.

It's all very curious. New Mexico is *crazy* eco-left, but depends far more on its hydrocarbon industry than California. (Really no comparison -- imagine having Hollywood, Silicon Valley, agriculture, aerospace, biotech, tourism....) On some level, Santa Fe's moonbats must know that if it weren't for oil and gas, the billions and billions they annually squander on "public investments" would be severely constrained. But they're spending the money of an industry that's DESTROYING THE PLANET. Aaaaaaargh!

Here's a shot of reality:

It's worth noting (as the column does) that Colorado is now a greater petroleum producer than California. Not very red, the land of Jared Polis. And nowhere near the ward of the federal government that New Mexico is. Yet it's comfortable with boosting its status as a major oil state. Hmm.

I see many recommendations for reforming the NM tax structure in the article. Notably missing is any mention of reducing government spending.

Never tell the client something they don't want to hear! NEVER!

PFM Group Consulting LLC (no New Mexico office that I can find) knows what side its bread is buttered on. Gotta make sure the next contract is secure....

Sadly, half of the GOP senators in the Roundhouse in 2019 voted for the "Energy Transition Act." HALF.

Green madness runs pretty strong in Republican circles. Wind and solar are popular (look for the weasel term "I support an all-of-the-above approach"), and since the GOP dominates in rural America, "bioenergy" is VERY big with many Republican pols from cow country. So, too, are "hydrogen hubs" and "carbon sequestration." They see these projects as ways to revive remote counties that have been losing population for decades.

It's Reason #389 why I want nothing to do with the GOP. (Not that I support the Democrats, of course -- GOOD LORD no.) Politicians put ambition and greed above principle and country, and so long as they continue to do that, I'll be around to expose and attack them ALL.

Sometimes, when I bash GOPers, I forget to note that my criticism is NOT applicable to Rand Paul. (Or Tom Massie.)
