Seven days ago, I launched No Dowd About It.
The response has been both heartening and humbling.
Who is D. Dowd Muska, a middle-aged schmuck in the American Southwest with a fondness for capitalism and limited government, to ask people to pay for his thoughts?
Well, naysayers (including myself) notwithstanding, a sizable number of you have, or are planning to, become No Dowd About It subscribers. After three decades in the field, I know a thing or two about public policy, economics, demographics, and culture. My perspectives are indeed monetizable, and the subscriptions keep rolling in.
Okay, here’s the “bad” news. The folks who cover the bills can’t be expected to provide for the free riders. No socialism here. Tomorrow, the paywall starts to be built. Yes, there will be some open-source content, but those offerings won’t be common. So if you haven’t subscribed, do so, forthwith. At less than a quarter a day, the rate is quite reasonable. Since I know you’ve cut the cord, and canceled your subscriptions to mainstream-media publications, why not use the savings to sponsor a man who fights for human decency, human freedom, and human progress? (If you’re experiencing hardship and just can’t come aboard at this time, contact me and we’ll work out an arrangement.)
Oh — one more thing. The Southwest Public Policy Institute has brought me on as a senior fellow. While I didn’t pursue the gig, it fell into my lap, and I’m glad. The recently launched organization has got big ideas and big plans, and it’s going to make a big impact on the eight-state region of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. It’s my great honor to be joining the team. Please support our work in every way you can.
Hope you’ve enjoyed this update. For your generosity, in its many forms, I thank you, the Enlightenment thanks you, and most of all … my dogs thank you.
Best,
DDM
Subscribed content is securing our free speech without violating our privacy. We got what we paid for with "free" content - the tracking of every click with overbearing moderation, even canceling.
But $9, $7.50, and $5 per month for each creative voice adds up. We're thrilled to keep you, Dowd, and glad that you've secured support with SWPI. The abrupt splitting of the mother blog by mitosis means now we're supporting both daughter blogs for reasonable 42¢ per day when before we haf the bargain of 12¢ daily. We hope you both live long and prosper.
This subscriber also hopes that Creators will collaborate into networks, and that economies of scale with advertisers will keep rates affordable and Creators prosperous.
