Scenes from a world that refuses to “go green”:
• According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, from “February 3 to February 5, record-breaking cold temperatures and extreme wind chill in New England created strong electricity demand as homes and businesses turned up the heat to combat the frigid conditions.” Doing its part to keep the juice flowing was “the region’s last remaining coal-fired power plant that sends all of the electricity it generates to the grid.”
• Speaking of the “dirtiest” fuel, the “first shipment of Australian coal to China in two years” recently arrived in Beijing. The planet’s second-largest economy “produced a record amount of coal last year,” and coal will be a big part of “about 70 [gigawatts] of fossil fuel-powered capacity” China plans to add this year. To the southwest, India — on track “to become the world’s most populous country” in 2023 — couldn’t care less about its “carbon footprint.” The CO2 Coalition’s Vijay Jayaraj:
