For Throwback Wednesday, a blue state bucks the trends

The 250th anniversary of the shot heard round the world got me thinking about Massachusetts. Libertarianism didn’t last very long there, did it?

But appearances can be deceiving. I grew up a few miles south of the MA-CT border (just beneath “AMMUNITION & FIREARMS” in the image above), and I know the Bay State quite well. In 2013, I wrote a column that explored some surprising data.

Scholars, writers, and pundits of the limited-government persuasion have few professional pleasures. But blue states’ public-policy failures provide a delicious perk.

The tax-and-spend strategy is spectacularly destructive. When government-employee unions, Nanny Statists, and mouthpieces for “public investments” are in charge, jobs vanish, residents flee, and debt accumulates to unsustainable levels.

Every rule has an exception.

In Massachusetts, moonbats infest all levels of government, yet the quality of life is impressive and economic conditions are shockingly strong.
