Contrary to [Oliver Wendell] Holmes, high taxes are better understood as the price we pay for failing to build a civilized society. The fact that we use force in extracting wealth from individuals, in their roles as workers, consumers and business owners, is an indication that we are selfish, hedonic and materialistic. We as a people apparently want certain goods and services so much that we will stoop so low as to use force garnered through the political process in order to obtain them. This method of obtaining wealth is of course self-defeating in the long run, and it is by no means an indication that we are civilized.
