In 1578, Tegucigalpa, the capital of and largest city in Honduras, was founded by Spanish settlers.
In 1789, the U.S. Department of War first established a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.
In 1864, the Treaty of Lisbon defined the boundaries between Spain and Portugal.
In 1885, the first practical public electric tramway in the world was opened in Blackpool, England.
In 1923, the Mandate for Palestine, establishing British administration of the territories of Palestine and Transjordan, went into force. In addition, the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, administered by France, commenced.
In 1972, Japan established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China after breaking official ties with the Republic of China.
In 1988, NASA launched STS-26, the first shuttle mission since the Challenger disaster.
In 2004, Burt Rutan’s SpaceShipOne performed a successful suborbital spaceflight, the first of two required to win the Ansari X Prize. Unintentionally, the vehicle’s success would spark the creation of “Spaceport America,” one of America’s worst economic-development boondoggles.
In 2006, Gol Transportes Aéreos Flight 1907 collided with an Embraer Legacy 600 business jet over Brazil. All 154 passengers aboard the former perished, while the occupants of the latter landed with no injuries.
In 2013, over 42 people were killed by members of Boko Haram at the College of Agriculture in Nigeria.
