In 1848, John C. Frémont was court-martialed for mutiny and disobeying orders. He was acquitted of the former and convicted of the later, but President James K. Polk quickly commuted Frémont’s sentence of a dishonorable discharge and reinstated him into the Army.
In 1865, Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery, and submitted it to the states for ratification.
In 1915, Germany became the first belligerent to make large-scale use of poison gas during World War I.
